I made this image about a week ago. Pictures of bluebell woods are something of a landscape photography cliche, however I’ve never taken one before, and I’ve never seen an image of this wood before, which is near my home in Cambridgeshire. So this is my attempt at a classic. The sun-star is achieved by shooting the sun through the leaves, using a small aperture.

On the 14th/15th of January, I travelled to Yorkshire for a look round the Nidderdale area. This is a beautiful place, but the main reason for my visit to this area in particular was that this is the territory of one of my favourite landscape photographers, Tristan Campbell. Tristan’s work is an inspiration, so it was a great to have a chance to meet up with him, and to see the places where some of my favourites from his image library were made.

A couple of weeks later, I visited Malham, a well known location in the Yorkshire dales. This area has so much photographic potential, with the cove, the limestone pavements and plenty of rugged landscape surrounding the village, often featuring lonely weathered trees and the like – this is somewhere I will have to return to! For my couple of days there the weather wasn’t entirely what I had hoped for, but nevertheless I did produce a couple of images that I’m fairly happy with. Included above are some of my images made on both trips (I may add more later).

On a technical note, all the images in this post were made using the Canon TS-E 24mm II, a tilt shift lens, which provides lens movements simular (though more limited) to those those of a view camera. This allowed for some very easy stitching, in addition to greater control of what’s in focus and some nice straight verticals. This lens is incredibly sharp and really makes the most of the 5Dii’s sensor, especially when used in conjunction with live view.

Well this is a quick first blog post on the new website, just to make sure everything is working as it should, hopefully to be followed shortly by something a bit more interesting.

I’m planning to use this area of the site to document some of my photographic adventures, to comment on locations I visit, and also to write down some thoughts on various photographic topics, which will hopefully be relevant to any photographers reading.

Cheers,
